House making

On 30th of October, I started on my house making project. I cannot measure what’s the actual scale is but the structure of the house is sourced from http://blog.naver.com/iloveyu74 and I changed a bit to my style. It’s a two floor house in an apartment. Since I was interested in the architectures, I was very interested and had enthusiastic about doing this.
I’ve done this project once before when I was in ‘International school of Paris’ in DT (Design Technology) class. The project was about making our own house. It could be traditional house of our own country or brand new one which you made for yourself. I did Korean traditional house. Which looks like this. It took me about 4 month to make, 2 hours and a half in a week.

Foam board is the basic material for it. 0.3cm & 0.5cm are most likely to use and I use glue-guns to stick them. Thick color paper will be perfect to make furniture and if needed, print out some pattern to stick. I just started so it’ not done very much but if I got time to finish it, I want to try making our school.

To make a house like the photo above, I need to plan well and choose the correct material and position to set. So I planned and initiated the activity: the structure of the house which I changed a bit to my style, the size of them, the colour of the house, what kind of materials to use, where to position, etc. And along the process, I paid extra attention to the ratio of the actual size and the model to make the house looks like it was done by the professionals.

Weather Club

When everyone had chance to do the weather club (before it activated) I had chance to go and check. There are many things to measure such as highest and lowest temperature of the day, temperature of present, how many clouds are there in the sky, etc… We (the weather club) measure these things for a whole year and compare with last years and the average in a nice big graph.

I’m going to join the weather club as the IB student with Shoko and Yoon joo next week. It will be the part of action and service. While I’m doing the weather club, I’ll care and think about environment and weather.

Korean Performance

On 4th of November, there was a performance in Korean in Moscow Luna Theater. It was the one of projects that Korea and Russia hold together. Performance was supported by the ministry of Russia-Korea culture. It was planned by art centre in Seoul and “Chorus troupe” cooperated. “Chorus troupe” is consisted of Yoon Joo-Sang and Lee Hye-Jin who played Anton Chekhov’s play “Gull” in 2004, director Gregory jichateukopseuki, the performing artist Emile kapelryuswi, etc… the first play for the “Chorus troupe” was called The Kreutzer Sonata; a husband who witnessed the violinist and his wife went wild so killed his wife.

They played it in Korean a subtitled in Russian. I never thought that I could see a play in Korean in foreign country. It was quite nice experience and felt proud of myself being Korean. It was part of creativity watching play and participates into it. Now I now the useful site, (http://russia.korean-culture.org/welcome.do) I’ll use it a lot to be more cultural.

Russian

Because I’m doing English literature and French for second language, I don’t get chance to learn Russian in school. So my mother decided to call tutor for Russian which was terrible news for me. That means I’m learning English French and Russian at the same time. Fortunately, my mom and sister is also doing with me. Tutor was not Russian but who have lived long in Russia. So in first class we learnt from the beginning from the alphabet. There’s 33 letters in Russian. There’s a story about Russian alphabet that why it looks weird. The letters were on the way to Russia from America and the ship was turned over so all the alphabets were sunk into the ocean. So the order of the taken out alphabets from the ocean are now the Russian letters. Now I memorized letter so I need to learn how to read.

It was my chance to develop new skill which is another language. I learnt how to write and read the Russian alphabets. also learnt some basic expressions and words like ‘thank you’, ‘excuse me’, ’hello’, ’good-bye’, ‘water’, ’here’, ’there’, ’how much?’, etc. I was surprised that it was able to communicate with Russians with such shallow knowledge of Russian. Now I can say hello to the guardian. And since lots of words written in Russian sounds like English, so once I got to read a word, I was able to guess the meaning of the contents.  I thought I would be hard to learn because of this difficult looking letters but it was nice. Now I’m interested in Russian, feels like I’m going to be russianholic.

Sport day

In my old school in Paris, we had sport day almost at the end of the year. We played a lot of different activities. In fact, it was more like an exam of physical strength. We borrow a small stadium and spent whole day.

So at the beginning, we did the long jump and the high jump (meant to be a warm up but it was more like a competition between girls). We were able to choose what we want to do in sports day. There was 100m, 200m, 400m, a relay, the long jump, and the high jump. I think I chose 200m and long jump. Since I’m slow runner, I took second last place in 200m running out of 8 people and I can’t remember how long I jumped for the long jump. It wasn’t that long….

After that, we were divided into 10 groups and had 5 activities to go through as a team. First activity was to jump and go through the hula hoop. One person from each group had to hold the hula hoop up with one teacher and other people jump pass through it. As many people go through in limited time is winning the activity.

Second game was to throw a water balloon in the water basket as many as possible. First, you spin 10 times and run about 100m than throw the water balloon which is really hard to do. Most of people didn’t even get to 100m run; they fall down as they’re running. So did I but made 1 goal in.

Third activity was to show the team work. Teachers show one person from the team pictures of people

The fourth game was an easy stage. There’s a bottle of full M&Ms in it and we had to guess as individual how many M&Ms are in there. Teachers even don’t know the answer and the winner was announced next day who was Korean girl. She got the bottle of full M&Ms and her team got one little pack of M&Ms.

Last activity was my favorite. Play the tug of war. It was a competition between 10 teams and our team won the second price which was quite nice.

Than we had lunch of our own than did the main part of sport day, A RELAY!! Team was divided in grade and 8 people from each participated. I don’t remember which team won but it was fun regardless of winning. And after that, just before we leave the stadium, we had teachers’ 100m race. And the winner was geography teacher not PE teacher. It was very fun.

This was part of action and community with friends. I felt much more confidence when I finished it and also felt closer with friends and made new friends. I think this was my beat sports day I’ve ever done.

Halloween Disco

We had Halloween disco on 29th of October. I had to go to hospital so I couldn’t join the party. I heard it was fun. So I’m going to talk about how was the school Halloween disco was in ISP.

In ISP we had a whole school day as a Halloween party. We came to school as dress up and even make up. A person, who got the scariest make up and dresses, gets the price at the end of the day. We didn’t make a jack-o’-lantern but made some decorations in classes. And we had a longer disco at the night. The disco is from 5 to 10 o’clock; all the students and teachers were welcome if they bring 5 Euros. Foods and drinks were provided for free and music was on. Sometimes slow music also to dance with partners.

Cleaning the park

On 13th of October Yoon joo and I felt bored and decided to go to a park for a walk which is placed near yoon joo’s house. We both were lazy and didn’t want to play sports but we had to do so exercises so we went to the park regardless of windy weather. The sun was shine and as we walk around the park, we realized that there are lots of trashes thrown away in the park. Therefore, we as an IB student decided to provide a SERVICE for the community.

We went to the nearest market to buy a plastic bag. We picked some trashes around the park. We were engaging with issues of global importance. The way back home, we could find out that the park has been very clean. We were proud of ourselves because no one forced us to clean park but we just did it because we can make the environment clean. It was ACTION because we exercised by walking for about an hour and at the same time we provided SERVICE to clean the park. We are planning to continue with this in order to keep our environment.

International Day

International Day

It was international day on Friday 15th of October. International Day is a day when the students and parents from all over the world join and have fun together. We share the culture of our own countries, foods and we are allowed to wear our national costumes. Also students perform their talents. Year 12&13 had to make some activities for year 7 to 11 so our team (Yoon-Joo, Soo-Min and me) decided to teach how to play Korean games. We chose Gong-Gi, Jumping Frog and Ttak-ji chi gi (a game of slap match).

Gong-gi was origin from 5th century by Ridian than it moved to Greece. They used sheeps upper rear portion of the heels. It travelled the Silk Road and brought to Korea. However in Korea instead of using sheeps heels, we used small stones. Also the rules are different from the other countries. We have five steps and we use five stones. First you throw them gentle on the ground. Pick one and throw it in the air. Before it falls down, you need to grab one of the stone on the ground then catch the one you have thrown. Repeat this until you grab all the stones on the ground. For second step you need to throw one stone and pick two stones from the ground and for third step throw one in the air and grab three stones. Forth step, grab all the stones in your hand. Throw one stone up, put four stones down and catch the one you threw before it falls. Then throw one stone (the one in your hand), grab four stones on the ground and catch the one you threw. Fifth step is a bit different. Hold five stones on your hand throw all of them in the air, turn your hand over than land it on the back side of your hand. Then throw it again and catch it with your hand. Be careful, once you drop the stone, its over.

We dont know when Jumping Frog and a game of slap-match begun but it existed for a long time. Its serving a double purpose game. By making them, we need active movements of hands which develop your brain and by playing with friends you can build more friendships. Some people think these games are not easy and childish but once you played with it you cant get out of them.

I think the students who came to our activities found these three game fun and enjoyable so was I. They had some difficulties with folding papers but they still had fun. We couldnt do a proper Jumping Frog because it took so much time to fold it.

When activities were finished, we had lunch time. Students brought their own countrys food to share with other students, parents and teachers. There are lots of Korean in our school so lots a Korean foods were there and they were the most popular foods (I guess).

When the lunch time was over, we had talent show. Several team performed singing a song, dancing, playing musical instruments and year 7, 8, 9s chorus. They were very good and I enjoyed the day.

It was part of the creativity and service. I organized an activity and work collaboratively with my group. I was the one who taught the students how to fold the jumping frogs. Yoon Joo was responsible for the “Gong-gi” and Soomin was helping me. There were about 4 groups, we taught those games and after two teams have finished, me and Yoon Joo changed our position so we don’t get too bored by just teaching one game for the whole day. If one of us was struggling with the explanation for the game, or having trouble with some noisy students, we helped out each other and succeeded our mission to widespread the traditional Korean games and raise people’s interests in them. We also served and informed about Korean food which we brought. It was ashamed that we couldn’t see what other groups were doing for their activities but still had fun teaching student, the Korean traditional games.
